As a new father, I have the privilege of teaching several things of the upmost importance:
- Treating all people with kindness and respect
- Practicing mindfulness
- Having a good taste in music
The first two notes require a degree of comprehension and verbalization – while I’m bullish in my daughter’s outlook on saving humanity, we’re not quite there yet, which leaves us with music. Between the tummy-time sessions, naps and walks around the neighborhood, our days are filled with music. A few of our current favorites:

Morning Time:
James Taylor “Something in the Way She Moves”
An ode to Kate’s Mom after a difficult night

Early Afternoon:
Jim Croce “Operator”
A chance to move and groove while teaching heartbreak

Afternoon:
Eagles “Peaceful Easy Feeling”
“Please don’t rip off my head, your milk will be served shortly”

Evening:
Jimmy Buffett “Come Monday”
Whether it’s the night’s sleep or an overnight work trip, we’ll be together soon
It didn’t take much self-reflection to realize why these songs are some of my favorites. These all lived in one of the many, black-zippered CD binders circa 2000 that us kids would rifle through and play out loud – the soundtrack to many of my best memories.
What an awesome thing to continue to share.
