As we roll into the holiday season, everything around us suddenly flips a switch. One day it’s pumpkins and leaf piles, and the next it’s holiday lights, Black Friday emails, and a dozen “limited-time” deals we apparently can’t live without. It’s always struck me as a bit ironic: we spend one day gathered around a table reflecting on gratitude, and the very next day we’re pushed into a mindset of not-enough (limited time, limited stock, limited everything.) Will I still be browsing the sales? Of course. I love a good deal. But that contrast got me thinking about how easy it is to fall into a scarcity mindset this time of year. Gratitude gets squeezed out pretty quickly unless you make a point to hang onto it.
And here’s where my slightly woo-woo side comes in. Over the years I’ve become a big believer in the power of your mindset. Call it manifestation, call it the law of attraction… at the end of the day, it all comes back to one truth backed by real research: what you consistently focus on shapes how you interpret the world, and ultimately, what opportunities you’re able to see. Psychologists call it “selective attention” and “priming.” Neuroscientists call it the Reticular Activating System. I’ve always just called it energy. When you feel grounded, grateful, and aware of the good in your life you naturally begin noticing more of it.
And when you notice more of it, something subtle but powerful happens… you start to feel lucky. Not the lottery kind of lucky, but the genuinely grounded kind – the unexpected help, the meaningful timing, the right conversation with the right person at the right moment. Research has shown that people who believe they are lucky actually put themselves in situations that increase their chances of positive outcomes. They speak up more. They connect more. They’re open to possibility instead of assuming the worst. In other words, “lucky people” aren’t just blessed… they’re tuned in.
That idea is what sparked our prompt for next week’s group article in the newsletter. We asked the whole Napier team one question: “What’s a moment from this year that made you stop and think, ‘wow… I’m lucky’?” We know you all love these team features, and I honestly can’t wait to see what everyone writes.
So, consider this article your little preview and maybe even a personal challenge: pay attention this week. Notice the good. Look for the tiny wins, the familiar comforts, and the things you’d miss if they disappeared. Feel lucky on purpose. And if the science is right, you might just attract a little more of that luck into your life.
