It is a joyous time of year as the crisp fall weather encroaches on New England. Windows down in the car as we try and skip around to find the songs that match our mood. For those who didn’t know, I have quite a few musical bones in my body. My mother went to Boston University back in the day and majored in music then went on to have a successful career as a music teacher mainly in the Brockton School system. Not only that, but she travels around the world now to sing in a choir to showcase her talents.

Did any of that translate to me? Sure did (thanks Mom!). I grew up excelling first at the recorder – much to my siblings’ chagrin. Then, when it was time in school, I picked up my first brass instrument – the trombone. Why the trombone you may ask!? I wanted to challenge my ear to make sure I hit each note with precision. I vividly remember struggling with this task because my arms were not that long at first. However, with practice (and a growth spurt) I found a way to make it all work.

Fast-forward through middle school and into high school, I had a year with the French horn, back to trombone, then finished up my illustrious career on the tuba. The highlight of my musical career was playing the Gettysburg Theme Song at Gettysburg, PA. It was a moving experience even as a high schooler who didn’t truly understand the gravity of what happened at this location many years prior. Now, what does this all mean for us today as we watch Taylor Swift and the Era’s tour break records for attendance and revenue?

There’s a lot music can teach you, and it can have a profound effect on you if you let it. When the economy needs a boost, in swoops the power of a superstar’s global tour. When your morning needs a bit of calm (as it often does at our house), enter the soothing sounds of Bach to bring it down a notch. I try to have my two young girls realize (without even telling them) – we are the music we listen to. Put another way, we can also turn into the music or people we are around. Make sure you spend the time with the people you want, and you will enjoy yourself no matter what you are doing.

As we head into another election, riding the highs and lows of natural market fluctuations, we encourage you to reach out and lean on us as your source of stability. After all, having the right financial partner in your corner is just as important as choosing your next song. What’s on your playlist lately?

Until next time…
