As soon as the ground thaws and the first signs of spring show up, I feel that familiar excitement—it means boating season is just around the corner, and I can’t wait to get back out on the water.

Every year, I go through the same routine to get the boat ready after its long winter break. I paint the bottom of the boat, scrub down the deck, untangle a mess of life jackets, and make sure everything’s in working order. It takes time and effort, but it’s certainly worth it. It means we’re that much closer to getting back on the water.

Boating has always been a special part of my life. I grew up on the water—cruising around in my grandpa’s old boat, learning to tie knots from my dad, and spending afternoons out on the ocean fishing. Those moments weren’t just fun—they taught me important lessons about being patient, being present, and making memories with the people I care about most.

Now, I get to start sharing this tradition with my own kids. They aren’t quite at the age where they can actually help out—in truth, oftentimes only making it harder. However, it’s a tradition we’re building together. I’m passing down the memories I grew up with and creating new ones for them to hopefully pass down to their kids.

In fact, I’ve even added their names to the long mooring waitlist—a list that can take up to 40 years! It might seem crazy to think that far ahead, but it’s a small step to make sure they’ll have a place on the water long after I’ve passed them the keys. It’s the same kind of long-term thinking we do every day at Napier Financial—helping clients plan today for the life they want tomorrow.

Getting ready for the future takes planning. It’s not always exciting work, but it’s worth it. Whether it’s preparing for retirement, saving for your kids’ education, or putting your infant and toddler aged children on a mooring waiting list, it all starts with doing the little things now to create something meaningful for the future.

So here’s to a new Spring and Summer season ahead. I hope it brings time for fun, time with family, and the kind of memories you’ll want to pass on.
