I’ve never been an avid hiker, but I am a fan of doing outdoor activities in the summer. We only get about 3 months of nice weather here in New England, and that pushes it, so we must take advantage of it when it’s here.
Last weekend my friends and I went down to just outside of Hartford to see one of our longtime high school buddies. We try to get down there at least a few times a year as Hartford isn’t the most exciting city in the world and he needs some company from the boys. He is an avid hiker, and always wants to go on 1 or 2 when we’re down there for a weekend. The deal we made with him this time was we’d go on a hike, but we had to spend the night at Mohegan Sun. This would ensure we would be properly unfit for exercise the next morning and would have an excuse as to why we were huffing and puffing. This was agreeable to him, and we woke up early Saturday morning to do the hike. It was a short one to be sure, but to guys who aren’t experienced it might as well have been miles. After a brutally steep climb, a couple stopped along the way, and my friend gloating while doing half the climb backwards, we finally made it to the top.
I will say, even though I’m not a great hiker, and CT might not have the best views in the world, I do find it is always worth it when you make it to the top. There was also a tower at the top you could climb for even better views, and it was truly unbelievable. Maybe hiking will be in my future after all.
