Golf has always been an interesting sport to me. I try my hand a few times every year, enjoy more than a few beers with my friends, and judge how well I do by if I finish with any of the balls that I brought. So far…….no luck. That’s why TopGolf has always sounded like more of my jam. I get to whack the crap out of the ball, miss horrendously a few times, and laugh at my friends as they do the same.
In Boston the only access we’ve had to TopGolf used to be events they held at Gillette and Fenway every so often, which I’d never been to. Fortunately, I went to school down in Charlotte, North Carolina, and was able to experience it a few times down there. It truly was a fantastic experience! Since coming back home in 2020, I haven’t had the chance to go back… until now! TopGolf opened their first location in Massachusetts in November in Canton, just down the road from my old stomping grounds at Xaverian Brothers High School.
I got the boys together as fast as I could, some begrudgingly, as many of them aren’t golfers, and we went for the first time last month. It was still a tad chilly up here at least to me – my friends think my time in the South has made me soft – but the bays were heated so it was surprisingly very nice even outside. There are many different games you can try at TopGolf but of course the only thing anyone wanted to do was see how far they could drive. We proceeded to take turns hitting the ball as hard as we could and tiring ourselves out in the first 20 minutes of being there. I won of course… I have no pictures of my victory, so you’ll just have to take my word for it. After that and all being exhausted, we decided it might be a good idea to practice with our irons. This went about as well as you’d think for a group of guys that each golf only a few times a year, so I’ll leave it to your imagination.
At the end of our time at TopGolf, we rapid fired a few last swings and left, probably consuming more appetizers and beers than balls hit…. We all can’t wait to go back!
