For Christmas this year, our oldest ask Santa for one thing, and one thing only, a Lego Unicorn. After searching the internet far and wide, the only Lego Unicorn we could find was at Target for $9. We bought this, plus a Star Wars X-Wing that was put in my stocking, and they were both a huge hit. This theme of loving Legos started before Christmas and has endured well after the holiday season.

With the cold, grey, and snowy winter setting in our family had to find other stuff to do outside of putting together Legos and activities inside the house, so back to the internet we went. Little did we know that a Legoland Discovery Center has opened at Assembly Row in Somerville. On a recent Sunday morning, we packed up the car and headed over right at opening time.

We didn’t know exactly what to expect – but we packed the stroller, loaded up on snacks, and hoped for the best. The first thing you do when you arrive is make your own Lego person while selecting each part from these huge bins. You select the body, then the legs, add the head and pick your hair/hat option. You get to bring that person around with you the entire time!

Both kids played with all the interactive sections, created other Lego structures (the rocket ship was a fan favorite), stopped at the Merry-Go-Round a solid dozen times, and ran around like kids should do. The most impressive part to me, which the kids didn’t care too much about, was the Lego rendition of major Boston buildings. You could see the Garden, Fenway Park, the State House, and the list goes on. The detail was impressive, and the size made it fun to look around. This place is made for all ages with a diversity of activities – it was a pretty awesome experience if you are looking for something to do on these cold winter days.

Just be aware, and as you would expect, you exit the facility through the gift shop. With all the excitement in the air we of course had to get a final Lego set for home. Natalie picked out a Lego Dog and Holly picked out a Mickey Mouse Train. Are these foreshadowing future events?! Only time will tell.

Until next time…
